How to open a closed door with a card
We don’t want to sound philosophical, but “when a door closes on us… there is always a way to open it.” Yes, it is literal because, even if it accidentally locks and we do not have the key to open it, we can resort to simple techniques to perform, but effective in the results.
Using a card, for example, is a very popular technique when it comes to solve this type of problem. In addition, it is one of the most used and with the lowest risk.
If you want to know more, keep reading because we explain below how to open a closed door with a card, so that you can make use of it and successfully solve the problem.
Which card to use
This technique is known as the “credit card” technique. However, it does not necessarily have to be of this type, as long as it is a plastic card it is enough, what is important is that it be flexible and resistant, so you can take any that is no longer used.
It should be noted that using credit cards or personal cards in the process could lead to their deterioration, since movements are made to open the door where the card is slid through the slot between the door and the frame, where the card’s swaying could scratch your design or it could bend completely.
Once the card to be used as a tool has been selected, its location must be specified, that is: where to place it to start its sliding. So it must be ensured that it is in the place where the closure occurs. This to be able to deactivate the security that keeps it closed.
Its location should be about three inches above the lock. To be sure and to determine exactly, push the door back as far as possible with your free hand, knee, or shoulder.
When the card is placed in that place, it should be tilted a little, applying pressure. The idea is to specify that the card can touch the latch of the lock.
In case you don’t know it, the latch, also called a latch, is the piece of metal that protrudes from the door and is embedded in the hole that contains the plate or strike, located in the frame.
The latch is in charge of keeping the door closed, it leaves the lock and enters the strike due to the turn we make with the knob. Its function is to move from one end to the other, and once released from the strike it allows the door to be opened.
It is exactly the latch that must be attacked or forced with the card in order to open the door. Therefore, it is important to place the card in the correct place to proceed to the next step. Which one? Well, the movement of the card or sliding.
At this point, it is when we proceed to do the real work of the technique. The card swipe must be done, between the door and the frame, as already mentioned.
When placing the card above the lock, we insert it through the slot to proceed to slide it. This should be done vertically, to be sure, but in a top-down direction. When hitting the latch, press down and angle the card toward the lock.
If the latch cannot be moved on the first attempt, it must be done again; but this time, applying a little more pressure when the latch is detected and the card is hooked, without forgetting that the card must be tilted after that. That way, the latch will be sunk into the lock.
Some doors require very little effort, while others can be opened simply by inserting a card between the frame and the latch without having to tilt or bend it as much.
Once the card has been swiped, we can help ourselves with our body to give that little push that it needs to be opened. And yes, it is literal, because once the latch is removed from the strike with the card, we only need to push the door for it to open.
Of course, this will not always be necessary, only in some cases where the latch is not fully removed and requires a slight push to do so completely.
Tips and Recommendations
- This technique works as long as the door lock is not locked. Otherwise, all efforts will be in vain, since the card does not have the strength and resistance necessary to fight with the safety that activates the key. So make sure before making the effort.
- Generally, doors that contain a single knob, spring latch, or slanted edge latch are ideal for this technique. Because the cut that the piece has facilitates the insertion of the card in the striker, allowing hooking and subsequent levering.
- The step by step of this technique can also be done with another plastic element if you do not have a card at the moment. For example, you can take a sizable scrap from an X-ray or from a soda bottle, water bottle, or any plastic container from which a sizable card-like piece can be removed.
In addition, the procedure will be the same, the X-ray or bottle patch is inserted between the door and the frame, always locating the latch. However, the force to be applied will depend on the ease of movement of the plastic to be used. That is, if you have less ability to slide, then more force should be applied.
- Finally, don’t forget that if all of this turns out to be too complicated for you, you can call a locksmith to help you open the door. This professional has all the capacity to carry out this type of work. Also, you may be surprised how easily and quickly they do it.
