How to open a door when the lock is stuck

Problems with doors and their locks usually happen on a daily basis. They usually close with a safety lock because we leave the security button activated (for the knob locks), or perhaps we close when we leave and when we return we notice that it is closed and that the keys are inside.

In this case, we are aware that, by mistake, we cannot open our door. But there is a worse problem than forgetting the keys and that is: that you try to open the door, still with keys in hand, and that it does not open because it is locked.

It is at that moment when our brain wants to explode in search of solutions. But what do you think? We will not allow that to happen to you ever again, and we mean that you will not have to think much to find a solution because we, in this article, have several for you. You just read and learn!

But be careful, do not try to apply these techniques to commit criminal acts. Use it to open your doors and help others under their full authorization.

Lever method

With this method you should carefully try to remove the latch from the door frame. It is known as one of the easiest to unlock locks in emergencies.

To do this, you will need a knife that we usually use in the kitchen to spread butter or jam, you can also use a spatula, a razor, long scissors or a flat screwdriver.

  • Now locate in the lock the point where the latch fits with the frame to make the closure.
  • If you have already found that point, proceed to insert the selected element to make the force lever, right in the gap between the latch and the door. If the door does not have that opening because it has been sealed, forget about doing this procedure. So proceed to the next one.
  • Pass it carefully to avoid breaking the wood or damaging the frame. You should try to move the latch.
  • Continue to pry firmly, without losing control. Once you move the latch, push the door open.

Remove the lock

Removing the lock is another alternative that you could do if you deserve time and comfort to do so. By removing it you will be able to review and improve its operation, it may be that you need to clean it, grease it or file some rough edges.

This technique applies to doors with knob locks, which can be removed without complications. For the execution, you will need a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the lock in position.

Disassembling this type of locks is almost intuitive, you must remove the knob, once you do, some pieces and screws remain visible.

When you have located the screws, remove them, basically working with only one side so that you can later remove it completely. Remove the cap that covers the base of the knob and everything else you have there.

When you have removed the pieces from one side of the lock, you will be able to visualize better. Identify the mechanism that releases the latch and action it so that you can open.

Then, disassemble the other side of the lock and carefully review the system, verifying that everything is in order and thus you will determine what is holding it.

The best thing you can do is clean it, lubricate it enough and finally, reassemble it.

Lubricates the key and lock

A technique that works par excellence to unlock locks is applying graphite powder lubricant, since most of the time they lock due to lack of lubrication and the easiest way to acquire graphite powder is buying it in a specialized store.

Of course, if you don’t have that much time, just use a graphite pencil.

To lubricate the key, sharpen the pencil and scratch each portion of the saws except for the area that does not insert into the lock.

Now, to lubricate the lock you must open the pencil so that you can remove the graphite and continue to scrape it with a knife so that you extract the dust. You can also pound the graphite into a mortar to powder.

Continue removing the finest powder, you place it on a sheet that you will later fold to create a channel. Place one of the tips in the hole in the lock and let all the graphite fall into the mechanism.

Finally, insert the key and move it for a while until the entire mechanism is lubricated and the key turns naturally.

Remove the hinges

The method of removing the hinges is to disassemble them. Although it sounds complicated, it is something quite simple to do, you should only have a flat screwdriver and a hammer on hand.

Proceed to insert the screwdriver into the small opening between the pin and the hinge. The pin is a kind of point or stake that goes through the leaves of the hinge.

These blades are hollow and are interlocked with each other, managing to maintain their mesh thanks to that pin that runs through them, which gives them firmness. The hinges are attached to the frame with a few screws. For our purpose, you can remove the dowel or remove the screws if the hinges are tight with them.

To remove the pin, you can use a flat screwdriver to push the head out. Once you manage to lift the peg a little, with the help of the hammer, strike firmly from the bottom up until the peg comes out completely. This should be done with each hinge that contains the door, only then you make sure that there will be nothing that can hold it to the frame and you will be able to remove it.

Generally, a locked door is synonymous with carelessness. The locks, believe it or not, also need maintenance, so lubricate them and clean the debris that could lodge by the wear of the metal.

It is important to take the necessary care with our doors, so we will extend the life of your locks and avoid headaches by not having incidents such as those detailed throughout this article.

Remember that if you want your assets to function and last, you must take care of them.
