How to open a door with a stuck slip

A slip is a piece that is part of the mechanism of a lock, in fact, it is one of the most important pieces of this system, since it is in charge of keeping the door closed or giving it freedom so that it can open.

When any of the parts present any damage or there is some alteration occurred in the systemWhether due to dirt, damage or friction with some other part, the most common is that the mechanism begins to fail. Remember that the slip is not the only piece in the lock, there are others that are part of the entire system, and some of these may be the cause for the slip to get stuck.

The question that arises is:How to open a door with a stuck slip? The answer is that we can try several techniques to open a door under this condition, among the options are: lubricate the lock, force the mechanism or disarm the lock, do you want to know how to do it? Next, you will be able to learn a little more about these techniques and how to apply them.

Lubricating the mechanism

There is a way in which you can lubricate the mechanism of a lock without risking damaging it. First, it must be clarified that adding oil to a lock can cause it to jam when the oil dries, and the solutions for this are much more complicated than acting correctly from the beginning.

And, the way to lubricate a lock is through the implementation of graphite powder, which is added inside the lock to cover the entire interior area and help the mechanism to unblock eliminating the friction that may exist between the different pieces that it’s conformed. Thus, with a good operation, the slip unlocks and we can open the door.

Now, we will give you two options with which you can get graphite powder:

  • The first of them is buying it in a physical store or via the web.
  • While the second option is about making the graphite powder by ourselves, using a pencil.
    • To achieve this we take a graphite pencil and open it completely with a knife, obtaining the graphite that is inside the wood.
    • Subsequently, we place the graphite in a bag, on top of a piece of paper to hit on it and turn the graphite piece into powder. It is important that there are no graphite grains mixed with the powder, all the particles must be tiny.

Once we have the graphite powder, we have to add it inside the lock, which we can do with a dropper or a container that has a similar structure. But if you bought the powder, it comes in an ideal container to apply it, you just have to follow the instructions on the container.

With the graphite powder inside the lock, we can turn the door knob or handle or insert the key in the lock, in case it does not have a knob, to realize that the slip is no longer stuck and will leave us open the door.

Forcing the mechanism

If the door has not been opened with the previous method, we will try to force the mechanism or in this case the slip. To do this we need a knife, it must have an adequate thickness so that it can be inserted into the slot between the frame and the door, since this is where the slip is located. Also, this knife must be resistant to breaking when bent, for force will be applied on it.

It is important to take into account three aspects that can prevent the success of this method:

  • The first of them is that we must be located on the outside of the door. Due to the shape of the slip, we cannot force it if we are on the inside.
  • As number two, we have that the door should not have a security tab, this would prevent us from inserting the knife and we can reach the slip.
  • Finally, the door cannot be locked, since the safety is a different part of the slip and foreign to it. So the insurance cannot be forced with the implementation of a knife.

To proceed to force the slip with the knife, we locate the position of the slip in the groove that we find between the door frame and the door.

  • In that place we introduce the knife inclined towards the frame.
  • Now we are going to push the door with our free hand so that it gives us a little more space in the place where the slip is inserted.
  • We begin to make movements up and down with the knife while applying pressure so that it manages to displace the slip from its initial position.
  • When we manage to do that, the work will almost be done, we just have to push the door to open it.

Disarming the lock

If we still have not been able to solve the problem with the two previous methods, we can disarm the lock. The only impediment we have is that to do so we must meet inside the door.

The tool that we will need will be a screwdriver.

  • So, we go to the door and check what kind of screwdriver will be useful in dismantling the lock.
  • When we get the screwdriver, we start the procedure.

It is important to know what type of lock we have. For example, to be able to disassemble a simple knob lock, we must first remove the knob with a button that we find next to it, and then remove a piece that covers the screws that will allow us to disassemble the lock. Some know this piece as a trim.

Other types of locks have the screws at a glance and it is not necessary to remove any part to achieve this.

Once we have the screws out we proceed to remove the lock. Those with a simple knob come out by pushing the cylinder and we have the piece that contains the slip still in place, we can remove it by pushing it with the tip of the knife and will automatically leave the door open.
